John has over thirty years’ experience as an architect in his own practice.  He is a Chartered Architect with a Masters in Urban & Regional Planning and has a Post Graduate Diploma from the Architectural Association School in Conservation Studies.
His particular interest in architecture is in designing mixed-use schemes in urban areas, many of which include important Listed Buildings or are in Conservation Areas.

His practice has won numerous awards for design including housing 'Architect of the Year' 2008. The firm has also won many business awards including the Architects Journal 'Employer of the Year'; Building 'Best Employer' 2011; and shortlisted Architects Journal 'Practice of the Year', ‘Best Employer’, ‘Fastest Growing Company’ and ‘Best Place to Work 2013.
John was a nationally-elected member of the RIBA Council and was Vice President for Professional Services, chairing the RIBA’s Professional Services Board.  He was also a trustee of the RIBA Board. In addition to these posts he was the Chairman of the RIBA Journal. He is a Trustee of the Architects Benevolent Society and a Member of their Executive Committee. He is an elected member to the Architect's Registration Board, the profession's regulator.

He has been a judge for the RIBA Regional Awards. He is on the judging panel for the What House Awards and has also judged the WAN Awards and Evening Standard Home Awards.
He has been a Visiting Fellow at Oxford Brookes University since 2000 and is President of The Doric Club the alumni association for architectural students. John sponsors a post-graduate research bursary for Part II students at Oxford Brookes.  He is an external examiner at The Bartlett, Huddersfield University and London Metropolitan and has lectured at Cardiff, Oxford Brookes, Manchester, Nottingham and Westminster universities.
