House of the Year 2013

About the awards

The WAN House of the Year Award is our longest running international competition and the final of our Specialist Series of six for 2013. The award celebrates and promotes the best in international architecture for single-family houses, attracting entries from all over the world and providing a global platform to showcase your designs.

Judging criteria

The jury will judge entries on a number of factors including originality, innovation, form and special quality, sustainability and context, but the following two areas will carry the most weight.

  1. How your design addressed the key elements of the client brief.
  2. Specific examples of how your building has: evolved its specific building type, used design and/or materials to enhance the user experience or integrate with its context and/or community.

Benefits of entering

As we have developed the awards over the years, we have also tailored the news on the site to be sector-specific, which in turn promotes the winning and shortlisted projects of the awards to be pioneers of their sector, selected by the experts and specialists on the prestigious judging panel.

The winning entrant receives an award certificate and their entry makes headline news on WAN. The remaining five, and any other schemes that the judges deem as 'commendable', will also be featured in a write up in News Review.

The winning and shortlisted entrants all receive dedicated press kits and their projects will be featured in a special edition of News Review which reaches over 200,000 property developers, architects, consultants and organisations in 120 countries.

The competition stages

A long list of 25 entries will initially be selected after the closing date, further details of the project: plans, sections, elevations and more technical information will then be requested from these entrants. From the 25, a shortlist of six will be selected before an overall winner is chosen.

Cost

The entrance fee is £180 GBP, but an early registration price of £150 GBP is available for entries made before 31 July, 2013.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all single-family houses projects completed on or after 1 January 2012.

Promotion

The WAN AWARDS received over 1,300 entries last year, making it the largest international architecture awards programme in the world. All entries to the WAN AWARDS are published on the WAN website, which serves over 10 million page impressions each month. A gallery of all entries for each sector will be published in News Review and will feature permanently on the WAN website. The winning projects will be covered in a special News Review feature including a video of the judges' comments.

Selected projects from the pool of entries will be entered into our Featured Projects section in WAN News Review, a weekly focus on transport that will run during the award to generate even more exposure for participants. Each week, our editorial team will choose one project from the pool of entries to be our 'Project of the Week'. (Please be aware that if your project is chosen for this feature this does not automatically enter you through to the long list of 25 buildings, this is a separate judging process.)

In addition, press releases are sent out to numerous publications and are often picked up by local, national and international media, as well as a variety of industry publications. You will also be provided with a press kit to enable you to promote your achievements for yourselves. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.

Press kits

Winning and shortlisted entrants are provided with a press kit to enable them to promote their achievements; included in the kit is a prepared press release, a press contact list for national and international media and industry publications, and a 'WAN Winner' jpeg footer for emails and websites. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.

Deadline

The closing date for the WAN House of the Year Award is 31 AUGUST, 2013.
